Opportunities for fishing abound in Florida, and there is likely no other place on earth that offers such a broad array of fishing options. This selection can be attributed to Florida's diverse ecosystems and climates which include temperate, subtropical and tropical.
Looking for bass or other tasty freshwater fish?
Check out Florida's lakes and canals, which litter almost everywhere in the state. Don't forget about Florida's Everglades, a giant freshwater and brackish sawgrass swamp in Southern Florida.
Looking to land a sailfish or some delicious dolphin (mahi mahi)? Florida's eastern coast from Jupiter south is one of the world's best saltwater fishing spots. A large barrier reef (the third largest barrier reef in the world, in fact) runs down the eastern coast of Florida, which means lots of bait to draw in migrating billfish, sharks, tuna, and kingfish, just to name a few. A regular stop on West Indies trade routes, South Florida also boasts a high concentration of shipwrecks (some intentionally sunk for the purpose of fishing) - even on a slow fishing day, these wrecks are the perfect place to snag a goliath grouper.
On Florida's west coast, the Gulf of Mexico provides a similar host of saltwater options, including reefs, wrecks, and local fisherman's favorite: oil rigs. Schooling bait fish around oil rigs attract the monsters anglers love to land.
And, if you've never tried your hand at bone fishing, head down to the Florida Keys (aka the 'Conch Republic') where small fishing boats called flats boats will take you into secluded areas where you can wrestle Tarpon and Barracuda to your hearts content.
