Boy's fishing fun ©Ashley Beolens http://www.fatphotographer.net
Despite starting this website I am no angling expert but I have enjoyed fishing in a number of places as I moved around following a career. Part of that was spent in Scotland where I fished small streams for trout and large lochs for pike. Rarely did I manage to attract any 'keepers' to my minnows but occasionally I fried a few brook trout for a late breakfast.

Nor did I manage any monster pike - just lots of 'jacks' taking my spinners.

I grew up in the southeast of England and having suffered a major accident was taken to a local lake by my dad where I did not need crutches just a fishing box and a rod. Thus he introduced me to what we Brits call 'coarse' fishing. That is going after non game fish rather than the royal pursuit of salmon and trout.

As a lad I practiced my art in a way that they now call 'pleasure' fishing - just baiting my hook and waiting for the float to glide away before striking into perch and roach, rudd and bream, or tiny gudgeon and plump chub.

In those days we would 'live-bait' for pike (a practice now rightly frowned upon) or throw out a 'dead' bait - usually an oily sea fish. Sometimes we would ledger a mangled spratt in search of monster eels.

In my teens I discovered the wonders of summer tench fishing - perhaps my favourite fish and I think the hardest fighting in our waters.

In later life I discovered carp fishing - no longer the mysterious pursuit of the few but becoming almost definitive among English fishermen. There is something to be said for pursuing a 20lb carp, hard to tempt and harder still to safely land.

In the UK there are many hundreds of lakes and ponds, disused gravel pits and canals full of 'coarse' fish falling prey to 'pleasure' anglers. There are also waters preserved for fly-fishermen stocked with native brown trout or their American cousins, rainbow trout. In some places 'match' fishermen fish competitions to see who can get the biggest bag of fish regardless of their individual weight, and in other club and syndicate waters dedicated anglers 'bivvy up' for nights at a time trying to take enormous carp.

Only a few fishermen eat what they catch, just those taking 'game' fish or our saltwater cousins fishing beaches and harbours or out in boats trying to take large cod or congers from wrecks.

In short, the UK has more than 4 million anglers spending their spare time fishing in a plethora of ways after a whole range of species... I say to all... 'Tight Lines'!
